Finding experiential design was an accident, but looking back, it makes perfect sense that this is where I ended up. My career has been a tapestry of, well, experiences, each one adding a unique thread to my professional fabric. From creating "magical moments" at Disney's Magic Kingdom to coordinating a Halloween wedding for a bride in a black dress. Or running into a building with fire alarms blaring while working in loss prevention for a Marriott resort to prepping and decorating 25 towering Christmas trees for a tourism display. Or calling over 300 cues for a production of "Into the Woods" to launching and managing a fast-paced, five-figure training program for the business of speaking. Each role has uniquely shaped my approach to designing experiences.
And that begs the question, what does it mean to design experiences?
To me, experiential design is like a machine or an intricate puzzle where every tiny piece matters. Each detail, no matter how small, contributes to the overall experience. Experiential design is all about creatively crafting, strategically planning, and meticulously executing every element to create a cohesive and impactful whole. It's about being in control of all the parts, intentionally choosing each one so they work together seamlessly to achieve the desired outcome.
This area of focus not only allows me to further develop my strategic thinking skills, but it also caters to my obsessive desire to plan and my natural inclination to question and create. I really thrive on the blend of these elements and the cause-and-effect relationship that every decision has on the final experience. It's truly is a discipline where creativity meets precision, which is exactly the sweet spot I want to live and create in.
